Photo Album: Making a Basement Living Space Safer in Hillsborough
Katie had lived in her Hillsborough home for some time, but when her child began using the basement as a living space, elevated radon became a new concern for the family.
She contacted Triangle Radon Defense, and we scheduled a free onsite consultation to evaluate the home and discuss the best mitigation options.
Because much of the basement was finished, we wanted to avoid placing the system in the living space if possible. The home's small utility closet was already crowded with other equipment, but we found a way to carefully work around the existing systems and install our extraction point there.
Outside, we took the same thoughtful approach. Instead of having the vent piping stand out on the side of the home, we routed it alongside the gutter downspout to help it blend into the exterior.
The finished system reduced the home's radon level to 1.3 pCi/L.
It's a good example of why radon mitigation isn't just about lowering a number. A well-designed system should also take into account how the family uses the home and how the finished installation will look.
